Age Requirements

Teens can work almost anywhere in today’s world. However, there are still many regulations in place in order to protect teens from discrimination or danger in the workplace. See the guidelines below for more details about some of the age restrictions that teens to be aware of:

Under 14:
As far as the government is concerned, you can not legally work. Due to laws in place to protect minors, you must be at least 14 years of age to work. But even though you’re not 14, you can still make money! There are many jobs that you can still do such as baby-sitting, lawn-mowing, snow-blowing, or even setting up your own business. See our other articles for more ideas on how to make money before being able to officially work.

Ages 14, 15:
Congratulations! You are allowed to work and earn wages according to U.S. law (the minimum age is 14). However, please note the following rules for this age group:
1)    You can’t work in jobs that are hazardous, such as working with vehicles, aircraft, chemicals, etc.
2)    You must be work outside of school hours, and not for more than 18 hours per week (and not more than 3 hours per day).
There are additional regulations, but these are the main ones to look out for.

Ages 16, 17:

You’ve made it this far in your life, you better be able to get a job - right? Right. But there are still some rules to keep an eye on:
1)    You can’t work in jobs that are hazardous, such as working with vehicles, aircraft, chemicals, etc.

Ages 18, 19, 20:
Legally, you are an adult, but there’s still the good old alcohol laws.
1)    You can serve alcohol, but only on a tray.
This goes without saying, but if you’re 21...

Ages 21:
You are free! Go work wherever you want!


A few additional reminders:
•    Depending on your state laws, you may need a work permit.
•    You may also need to file taxes depending on how much money you earn.
•    For both of the above, you need a social security number.
