Getting Your First Job

It’s important to have a good understanding of everything job-related, and no better time to do that than in time for your first job. This will  guide your way to finding a job.

The very first thing you need is a simple resume. Depending on your age, and academic experience, the content and length will vary. However, even if you don’t have any job experience, it can be important to showcase your skills on your resume in other ways. The resume will show that you are serious about a potential job, despite your young age or lack of extensive experience. It will also serve as a formal method to keep track of your achievements.

The next step will be to compile a list of potential jobs. There are many resources at your disposal: the JobSwagger listings, your local newspaper, asking local businesses, etc. Organize a list of all the places for which you intend to apply. Throughout the process you can keep track of where they offer you a job, what the wages are, and more. This list will help you later on if you have multiple offers.

Some places will require an interview. Dress formally, prepare responses to common questions beforehand, and do everything you can to show that you are serious about the position. Don’t be discouraged if the first few places don’t offer you a job. Just hand them your resume, and move on to the next potential job opportunity. Also, remember to follow up if you don’t get a response within a reasonable amount of time (at least a week in most cases). A polite phone call will show that you are responsible and organized.
