Writing Your First Resume

Category: Job Searching
Date Published: 1/5/09

The idea of having to write a resume may sound a little intimidating, but it shouldn’t.  If you follow the steps mentioned in our article it will make writing your first resume that much easier.

Step one: Gather all the fun facts of activities you did in school.
This could include being a part of your school’s student government, sports team, theater department, or anything else you think might sound interesting. You could also include anything you did outside of school like karate, swim team, or anything else that shows you’re an involved person. The key point to remember is that companies want to hire someone who is a well-rounded person who can offer something special to the company. No one is expecting you to be a genius, but they want to see that you are of value to their business.  Don’t worry all this means is be yourself and present yourself in your resume.

Step two: Now that you gathered all your activities its time to write down these five things:
1)    Your GPA (Grade Point Average) as long as it is greater than a 3.0
2)    Anything unique about your personality
3)    References of people who know you
4)    Past jobs or work experiences (if you have any)
5)    Awards

Step three: Now that you have all your information, write your…
1)    First Name Last Name
Home Address
City, State, Zip code
Contact Phone Numbers (Cell & Home)
Email Address
2) Then write your education information: School and GPA.
3) Past work experiences (if any)
4) List of activities, awards, and anything else you think is important.
5) References
6) List it in this order and use bullet points for 2,3,4 and 5.

Make sure to ask the advice of a parent, family friend or guidance counselor to look over your resume before submitting it for a job. The more people examining your resume and giving you advice is going to be the best thing for you. Good Luck.
